Electing Democrats in DuPage County requires passion and commitment from local volunteers who stand up to support candidates by contacting voters at their doorsteps, on the phones, and just talking to their friends and family about advancing Democratic values. We now have three Democratic Congressmen representing us in Downers Grove Township and we hope to add another Democratic representative in this election cycle, as well as a Democratic State Representative. This work is the result of long term commitment by some very dedicated people.

One of our most passionate and committed Democratic advocates is Julia Kennedy Beckman. She was the recipient of the Democratic Party of DuPage County’s Tinker Harvey Pioneer Award for 2016. Julia has been an active participant in Illinois Democratic politics for more than for more than four decades. Currently, Julia is the Precinct Committeeman for Precinct 110 in Darien, State Central Committeewoman for the 11th District, an elected member of Community High School District 99 and an active volunteer for many campaigns.
Julia began her political career in DuPage with the McGovern campaign for President in 1972, working with her good friend, Kathryn “Tinker” Harvey, going door to door and preparing mailings. She became a precinct committeeman in 1978. She counted it a great honor to be Tinker’s close friend until her death, working closely with her in the DGTDO and the DuPage County Democratic organization for many years. She continues to do all she can for the Democratic Party in DuPage and Illinois.
Julia has been a candidate for several Democratic offices, including DuPage County Board, Illinois State Senate, and Democratic State Central Committeewoman. She is also a past president of the Democratic Women of DuPage County and recently formed the Blue 11th with State Central Committeeman Duffy Blackburn to increase outreach to Democratic voters. Warka Barmada is another passionate volunteer. She was the recipient of the Downers Grove Township Democratic Organization Precinct Committeeman of the Year in 2016. Since becoming involved as a Precinct Committeeman, she has provided great support to the grassroots efforts to elect Democratic candidates, adding value to the Downers Grove Township Democratic Organization and the Democratic Party of DuPage County.
Warka actively works her precinct, as well as assisting with other tasks in neighboring precincts such as Election Judge and PC recruitment. She takes pride in knowing her precinct and working to get the Democrats out to vote.
Warka’s contributions do not stop at her precinct. She is one of our most reliable volunteers for voter outreach through phone banks and canvassing activities. She has also worked hard to build a connection between local Democrats and the Muslim community. She assists in helping our members understand the complexity of the situation in the Middle East by discussing issues at meetings.
Whether you are available for long hours or have just a little time to share, we welcome you to join us to continue to expand our Democratic representation. Can you make some phone calls? Knock on doors? Write letters? What are you willing to do to help elect more Democrats in DuPage County?
