Pope Francis Speaks to the Essential Benefits of Unions

By Chris Hotchkin

Pope Francis believes “There is no good society without a good union.” In remarks to a group of Italian unions the Pope instructed that all people need meaningful work and also need periods of rest. He said that unions have the important task of giving “voice to those who have none, denounce those who would sell the needy for a pair of sandals, and unmask the powerful who trample the rights of the most vulnerable workers.” He believes that labor unions should work not just for their own members, but for the protections and benefits of all workers, and for those who are excluded from work and excluded from human rights. The Pope also criticized the extreme salaries and massive retirement packages of CEOs, saying there is a need for less inequality in the world.
