Message from the Chair

It’s been another unbelievable month. It almost seems like it has been “Hate Month” since our last newsletter! The flames of hate are being fanned from the highest levels of the federal and state government! Charlottesville, the ban on transgender individuals in the military, and the attack on young, productive immigrants with pending changes to DACA have all taken place in the last month. If that wasn’t enough, the governor continually tries to divide the state by pitting rural and suburban residents against urban communities with his rhetoric and actions. Closer to home, Downers Grove Library Board Member, Art Jaros, publicly attacked the LGBTQ community. (Jaros was appointed to his seat at the August 15, 2015 meeting of the Downers Grove Village Council despite the warnings of many community members. Only two board members voted against the appointment, Greg Hosè and Bob Barnett).

Don’t mistake these actions and policies for anything other than a movement to suppress the Democratic vote in 2018 and foist an extreme right-wing agenda on our country, our state, and even our local municipalities. The pure outrage that continues to grow since November 8 has spurred a new level of activism in our community. I am proud to see the continued resistance to legislation and policies that are designed to restrict constitutional rights and harm our neighbors who are in need of help.

While resistance activities are making a difference, they are not enough. They will not elect the Democratic officeholders who are required to pass laws that protect families, individuals, businesses, and institutions. Now is the time for the rubber to meet the road. So, lace up your sneakers, grab your clipboard, and be part of the change you want to see. Is there a Democratic committeeman in your precinct? If not, it’s time to circulate a petition and run yourself. Do you want to elect a Democratic Governor? If so, pick out the candidate you want to help and circulate his petition to get him on the primary ballot. Do you want to ensure that you have a Democratic representative in Congress or in the State Legislature? Circulate petitions for the candidates of your choice.

If you need to find out more about the candidates, running for office, or how you can help, stop by our office on Saturday mornings between 9-noon. We are planning a local event for the Resistance Illinois Weekend of Action on Sunday, September 17 from 2-5pm from our office at 906 Curtiss Street in Downers Grove. Please plan to join us to circulate petitions or make phone calls.

Thank you to everyone who is engaged in supporting the Democratic cause from funding the office to organizing resistance to local initiatives (like the Willowbrook Guntry Club and the Asphalt Plant) to canvassers for the Illinois 6th Coalition to everyone who is running or helping Democratic candidates. We can make a difference if we all work together!

Keep up the good work!
