Why I Choose to be a Democrat
By Mehr Qayyum
I choose to be a member of the Democratic Party because I was an Independent in college and graduate school…and saw that my intention to promote inclusivity and push for more progress requires coalition-building.
I choose to remain a Democrat because I was inspired by DNC Deputy Chairman Keith Ellison’s many visits to Illinois. He pointedly asked us, as Millennials and activists, to consider the power of coalition-building. Coalition building is made possible under the umbrella of a party that is learning how to amplify inclusivity measures.
Hope turns into triumph when I can identify 50 percent of the common ground needed to pool my resources with other Democrats. That 50 percent includes social and economic justice as well as inclusive politics. Even after losing an election as a Democratic candidate, the push for social justice overrides my wish to huddle in the corner of Independents at a concert.
