LIBRARIES

In general, the library board of trustees has a role in determining the mission of the library, setting the policy that governs the library, hiring and evaluating a library director, and overseeing the general management of the library.  This role varies with every library system.  Trustees may need to study service needs, explore alternatives, estimate funding needs, identify potential funding sources, and establish priorities.  The number one job of library trustee is to advocate for the library and its community.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS

In this unpaid position, a school board member is elected by voters within a school district.  Two major jobs for board members are to hire and evaluate the superintendent, approve and manage the budget.  In addition, board members approve new curricula, write and follow board policies, and approve referenda for bond issues to improve or add to school buildings and approve tax rate increases.   An individual board member never speaks for the entire board.
